• Applying for ACTC

  • What information will I be required to provide regarding the coaching supervision or guided reflective practice hours submitted as part of my ICF ACTC application?

    Applicants will be required to provide their coaching supervisor’s name, email, and credentials, as well as the dates of the engagement and the total hours completed through the supervision engagement. Applicants must obtain written permission in advance to provide their coaching supervisor’s name and contact information as part of the ICF ACTC application.

  • Who is eligible to provide coaching supervision or guided reflective practice?

    To meet the coaching supervision and guided reflective practice requirements for the ICF ACTC, a candidate’s coaching supervisor must meet at least one of the following criteria: 

    • Coaching supervisor must hold an active coaching supervision certification, credential or accreditation by a coaching or coaching supervision professional body; OR 
    • Must have completed at least 60 hours of coaching supervision education and have at least 120 hours of experience; OR 
    • Must be an eligible ICF Mentor Coach with 60 hours of coaching supervision education and at least 120 hours of experience. 

  • May I submit team coaching educational programs or courses that I have developed and delivered toward the educational requirements for the ICF ACTC?

    Yes, if you created and taught or delivered a team coaching education program that meets the standards of coaching education, including direct interaction with instructors and alignment with the ICF Team Coaching Competencies, ICF Core Competencies, and ICF Code of Ethics, you may submit that program or course as part of your ICF ACTC application. For any non-ICF accredited courses that you created and taught, you will be required to submit training curriculum documentation for review (course outline or syllabus that indicates content and time for each course module). You will also be required to provide a letter that includes the program or course name and verifies that you created and taught the class.   Upon review and approval, the hours for one delivery of the program or course may be counted toward the ICF ACTC education requirements. For instance, if you created a 15-hour team coaching course and delivered it three (3) times, it would count for 15 hours of credit, rather than 45 hours of credit.  

  • What information will I be required to provide for team coaching education programs or courses that I submit to meet the educational requirement?

    In the online ICF ACTC application, applicants will provide the following information:  

    • The name of the organization that operated each team coaching program or course completed 
    • The name of each program or educational course completed 
    • The total number of hours of each program or course submitted 
    • The estimated number of hours on team coaching within the program or course completed 
    • The start date for each team coaching program or course completed 
    • Certificate of completion (or letter) for each program or course 

    For any non-ICF accredited programs or courses provided toward this requirement, applicants will be required to provide a course outline or syllabus to demonstrate alignment of the curriculum to the ICF Team Coaching Competencies or ICF Core Competencies as applied in team coaching contexts, as well as a brief reflection on how each non-accredited program contributed to the applicant’s knowledge and skill development in team coaching practice. 

  • What education/training can be used to fulfill this training requirement?

    To be eligible, education or training must primarily focus on team or systems coaching and align with the ICF standards for coaching (including the ICF Core Competencies, Team Coaching Competencies and Code of Ethics). Educational programs are not required to be accredited by ICF, however courses submitted under this requirement will be reviewed to ensure alignment with ICF standards.

  • If I am working to apply for an ICF Credential or my ICF Credential application is currently under review, may I begin an ICF ACTC application?

    Yes. Individuals may open an ACTC application and begin to complete it while in the process of applying for or renewing an ICF Credential. However, a candidate will not be able to submit their ACTC application until they have been awarded an ICF Credential or successfully renewed a lapsed Credential.

  • If my ICF Credential has lapsed or expired, may I still submit an application for the ICF ACTC?

    No. To be eligible for and submit an application for the ACTC, you must have an active ACC, PCC, or MCC. 

  • What supporting information or documentation will I submit with my application?

    Candidates will be required to provide the following information or documentation with their ICF ACTC application: 

    • Proof of course completion (certificate or letter) from a team coaching education program(s) 
    • Course syllabi or course summary for any non-ICF accredited team coaching education programs. Course syllabi or outlines should demonstrate alignment with the ICF Team Coaching Competencies, ICF Core Competencies and ICF Code of Ethics. 
    • Coaching supervisor(s)’ name and information, including the total number of coaching supervision or guided reflective practice hours completed with the supervisor(s).  
    • Letter of verification for two team coaching engagements. Each letter of verification can be provided by a team member, team leader, authorized representative of the sponsor organization or by a third-party coaching body. Letters should be signed, submitted on company letterhead (unless prohibited by a confidentiality agreement) and include the following elements: The name and contact information of the authorized representative, their role within the organization or team, the name of the ACTC applicant, the total hours of the team engagement, the start and end dates of the engagement, and the number of team members.  

  • How do I apply for the ICF ACTC?

    All ICF certification and credentialing applications are available online, including the ACTC application. To complete the application form, candidates will be required to have or create a profile on the ICF website. Once a candidate submits the online application, it will be reviewed by ICF Credentials and Standards. Please note that any missing or incomplete information in the application may delay processing. 

• Team Coaching Certification Exam

  • Do I need to take the exam when I renew my ICF Advanced Certification in Team Coaching?

    Individuals renewing an ICF ACTC are not required to take the exam as part of the renewal process. 

  • Is feedback provided regarding the questions missed?

    Candidates receive a score and overall exam results. Feedback on incorrect exam items is not provided to candidates. 

  • What score is required to pass the ICF Team Coaching Certification Exam?

    The passing score and all exam results on the ICF Team Coaching Certification Exam are reported as scaled scores. The range of possible scores is 200 to 600, with a passing score of 460. 

  • How is a candidate notified of their exam results?

    Once a candidate completes the ICF Team Coaching Certification Exam, preliminary results are compiled and provided immediately to the applicant via the testing site. One week after completion of the ICF Team Coaching Certification Exam, applicants will receive official notification from ICF Credentials and Standards regarding the status of their ACTC application. 

  • If I miss my appointment or deadline to take the ICF Team Coaching Certification Exam, can I still take the exam, or will I need to reapply?

    Candidates who are unable to take the exam at their scheduled exam appointment time are requested to cancel or reschedule their appointment at least 48 hours prior to the original appointment time, in alignment with Pearson Rescheduling and Cancellation policies. Those unable to cancel or reschedule at least 48 hours in advance will be subject to the forfeiture of exam fees. Candidates who miss their exam appointment will not be required to reapply, but will be subject to the ICF Credentialing Exam retake fee to schedule a new appointment. The retake fee is $105 USD. 

  • Who created the ICF Team Coaching Certification Exam?

    The exam was developed by ICF using globally accepted practices for test development, including a comprehensive job analysis of the knowledge, skills and abilities required of coaches. Experienced ICF team coach practitioners served as subject matter experts throughout an extensive process to develop, validate and review each exam item, and to set the passing standard for the exam. 

  • Once I receive an invitation to complete the ICF Team Coaching Certification Exam, how long do I have to take the exam?

    You are given 60 days to schedule and take the ICF Team Coaching Certification Exam. During the exam appointment, you will have 2.5 hours to complete the exam. 

  • When/how does an applicant receive an invitation to complete the ICF Team Coaching Certification Exam?

    Once an applicant’s ACTC application is reviewed, ICF staff will contact the applicant via email with a status update containing the next step in the review process. Applicants who are approved to sit for the ICF Team Coaching Certification Exam will receive an email invitation that includes instructions for scheduling an exam appointment and completing the exam. 

  • How will the ICF Team Coaching Certification Exam be delivered?

    ICF Credentials and Standards is pleased to offer the ICF Credentialing exam through the global network of Pearson VUE testing centers, as well as through Pearson OnVUE — a live, remote proctoring service. Delivered on a secure platform, live remote proctoring provides the same high quality and security in the testing process, all from the convenience of a candidate’s home or office!  The test is comprised of approximately 62 questions designed to assess a candidate’s knowledge of the ICF Team Coaching Competencies and how to apply them in practice. Questions are organized into four sections. Sections 1 and 3 contain multiple-choice questions that test candidates’ knowledge of topics foundational to the Team Coaching Competencies. Sections 2 and 4 contain scenario-based questions that test candidates’ judgment and decision-making in realistic team coaching situations.  

  • What if I don’t pass the ICF Team Coaching Certification Exam?

    Candidates who are not successful in passing the ICF Team Coaching Certification Exam are able to retake the exam for a fee of $105 USD. Details for re-examination will be provided to candidates upon notification of their results.

  • Do I have to have an ICF Credential?

    If you are serious about developing your coaching business, an ICF Credential is the best way to set yourself apart by demonstrating your knowledge, skill and commitment to high ethical and professional standards. However, because coaching is not regulated by any country or state, you are not required to get training or credentials.   Holding a credential – especially an ICF Credential – is extremely important to today’s coaching clients. The 2022 Global Consumer Awareness Study found that 85% of coaching clients say it’s important or very important that their coach holds a certification or credential.   • Does ICF offer different levels of credentials?

    Yes – ICF offers three credentials, correlating with your experience and coaching education.  Associate Certified Coach (ACC) – Completed 60 hours of coach specific education and 100 hours of client coaching experience  Professional Certified Coach (PCC) – Completed 125 hours of coach specific education and 500 hours of client coaching experience  Master Certified Coach (MCC) – Hold or have held a PCC Credential, completed 200 hours of coach specific education and 2,500 hours of client coaching experience 

  • What is an ICF Credential?

    An ICF Credential is a professional certification indicating that you have completed a rigorous credentialing process designed to develop and refine your coaching skills.   It is an indication that you are dedicated to upholding strong principles of ethical behavior in coaching. An ICF Credential shows your clients and peers that you are committed to the coaching industry and to developing yourself as a coaching professional.

• About Credentialing

  • Are ICF Credential-holders required to be ICF Members?

    The ICF Credential stands independent from ICF Membership.    This is an important provision of compliance with globally accepted standards for bodies operating individual certification programs. The value of an ICF Credential as an industry-wide marker of an individual’s commitment to ongoing professional development and outstanding professional practice is distinct from the benefits of ICF Membership (e.g., networking and leadership-development opportunities, discounted event attendance, access to archived virtual learning).

  • Do I have to get an ICF Credential?

    If you are serious about developing your coaching business, an ICF Credential is the best way to set yourself apart by demonstrating your knowledge, skill and commitment to high ethical and professional standards. However, because coaching is not regulated by any country or state, you are not required to get training or credentials.

  • Can I list my ICF Credential as “Pending” once I’ve submitted the application?

    No. You may only reference an ICF Credential in your marketing information, website or other materials after it has been officially granted by ICF. Because submission of an application does not guarantee that you will be granted an ICF Credential, referencing an ICF Credential prior to official receipt is misleading and potentially unethical. Making a false claim is a breach of the ICF Code of Ethics.

  • Do I have to earn a Professional Certified Coach (PCC) Credential before I can apply for the Master Certified Coach (MCC) Credential?

    Yes. To apply for the MCC, you must hold or have held a PCC credential.

  • Do I have to earn an Associate Certified Coach (ACC) Credential before I can apply for the Professional Certified Coach (PCC) Credential?

    No – you may apply directly to the PCC when you meet all requirements.  You do not need the ACC first.

  • How long does my ICF Credential remain active?

    All credentials are valid for 3 years.  To renew your credential, you will need an additional 40 CCEs obtained after your credential was awarded or after the last renewal of the credential was granted. Visit the Credential Renewal page to learn more.

  • When can I apply for my credential through the International Coaching Federation (ICF)?

    You may apply for a credential whenever you have met all eligibility requirements and are ready to make your application. NOTE: Coach Education, Client Coaching Experience and Mentor Coaching hours do not expire.

• Application Issues

  • I can’t log in to the ICF website. What do I do?

    Please contact the ICF Support for assistance with issues logging into the website.

  • I chose to pay for my application in installments, but now I want to pay for it in full. How can I do that?

    If you would like to complete the payment of your application fee:  

    1. Access your ICF Profile.  
    2. Scroll down to "My Invoices" section, click on "View All Invoices"  
    3. Click into the invoice with the balance due for the application  
    4. In the upper right side, click on "Add to Cart"  
    5. Follow the prompts to submit payment  

  • I submitted the wrong application. How do I change my application type?

    Once your application has been submitted, it is put into the queue to be reviewed.  Once the ICF Staff reaches your application, and if indeed it is the incorrect application, they will reach out to with specific directions on which application should be completed and the process for a refund and submission of the correct application.

  • I created the wrong application but did not submit. How do I change my application type?

    To create a new application, you will need to go through the Credential Path Survey again and answer the questions appropriately.  If the survey still takes you to the same application, then please reach out to ICF Support and provide your training certificate(s) so they can review and assist you in getting to the correct application.  When your submitted application is reviewed, the incorrectly created application will be removed by ICF Staff. 

  • I’m getting an error when uploading my files. Why won’t my documents upload?

    There are typically two reasons why you may be having an issue uploading your documents.  

    1. If you have had your application open for an extended period of time, for security reasons, the page may time out and will not allow actions (like uploading) to be taken.  Please leave your application by clicking on your name in the upper right-hand corner. Then access your application again and try the upload. 
    2. Another reason for an upload issue is the file name and size. The document size must be under 95 MB. The file name should not contain any special characters (e.g., ? / | \ ! @ # = $ % +). 

    If none of the above resolves the issue, please reach out to ICF Support for assistance.  

  • Why am I not seeing the Member price for my Credential application?

    To submit your application, you must be signed into the website.  If you are a current member, you will be given the member price automatically. You will not need to enter in any code.     If you are questioning the price you see, please note your application type and then visit the information page for the credential level you are apply (ACC, PCC, MCC).  Locate your application path and verify the member/non-member fee.    

  • The Credential Path Survey will not create my application. What do I do?

    If you have completed the survey and are not presented  with a page to create your application, please reach out ICF Support for assistance. In your email, please include the credential level (ACC, PCC, MCC) you are interested in applying along with your education certificate(s) so we can create the right application for you. 

• Applying for MCC

  • Will I have to take the Exam again, even though I’ve previously passed the Exam?

    Yes. The ICF Credentialing Exam must be taken with each new application for a Credential, even if the exam has already been passed. The ICF Credentialing Exam is part of the credential process. In alignment with the highest standards for credentialing bodies, each credential is a stand-alone achievement, and the applicant must complete all requirements for the Credential for which they applied. 

  • Can I use the Mentor Coaching I received for my PCC Credential?

    No. Mentor Coaching hours submitted with an MCC Credential application cannot be the same Mentor Coaching hours applied toward a previous application for the ACC or PCC Credential.

  • Can my education / experience hours from my ACC and/or PCC Credential application be used for my MCC application?

    All coach education and experience hours (as of the start of your coach education) can be used towards the MCC requirements, even if used previously for an ACC and/or PCC credential or any renewal of a credential.

  • Can I apply directly to become an MCC Credential-holder?

    No. To apply for the MCC credential, you must currently hold or have previously held the PCC credential.

• The Credentialing Process

  • Do I need to pay for the application first in order for it to be reviewed?

    Yes, the application must be paid in full before the review process will start.  If you opt to pay for the application in installments (2 or 4), your application review will not begin until the final payment has been received.

  • How can I monitor the status of my application’s review?

    You may monitor your application’s review by signing into your ICF Profile. Then, access your credential application by clicking on “Continue Application.”  This will bring you to the applications dashboard and you can view the status of each section of the application.

  • What is the estimated review time for my application?

    The review time of an application is based on the credential level and application path you submitted.     Estimated Review Time:

    • ACC Level 1 / Level 2/ ACTP & PCC Level 2 / ACTP applications: 4 weeks  
    • ACC ACSTH & PCC Level 1 / ACTP applications: 14 weeks  
    • ACC Portfolio: 14 weeks  
    • PCC Portfolio: 18 weeks  
    • MCC Portfolio & MCC Level 3: 18 weeks 

  • How do I create the application to apply for an ICF Credential?

    To apply for your credential, you will take a short survey to help you access the correct credential level and application type for which you are eligible.  Access the Survey.

  • Do I need to upload my coaching log into the ICF Credential application?

    Due to data privacy laws, you will not upload your client coaching log to ICF. You will enter your total number of coaching hours you have acquired into the application and attest that you have obtained them in accordance with the requirements If you are selected for an audited, you (not ICF) will reach out to your clients asking them to verify to ICF your coaching hours with them. 

  • I completed my coaching education with a provider that is not accredited by ICF. Can I still apply for an ICF Credential with non-accredited education hours?

    Yes, you may use non-ICF accredited programs towards your credential education hours.  You will apply through the Portfolio Application Path.      NOTE: You will need to submit robust documentation to show what you were taught in the program and that it fulfils ICF Education requirements.   Visit the Education Requirements page to learn more about what is accepted as Coach Specific Education and the documentation required.   

  • What is the difference between the application paths? Is one path better than another?

    All paths are created to have the same five (5) criteria for a credential application. The path you take depends on the type of coaching education you received.  All paths lead to the same credential. No one path is better than another.  All application paths require:  

    • Coaching Education  
    • Mentor Coaching  
    • Coaching Experience Hours  
    • Recorded/Observed Coaching Sessions  
    • ICF Credentialing Exam

  • How do I get my credentials through ICF?

    Once you have met all the requirements to apply for a credential, you will need to click on "Credentials & Standards" in the menu bar and then on the "apply now" button on the resulting gray navigation bar and take a short survey to get you to the right level and application type.   Take the Survey.  

• Upgrading ACC to PCC

  • Will I have to take another exam if I upgrade to the PCC Credential?

    The ICF Credentialing Exam must be taken with each new application for a Credential, unless the exam has been passed within 12 months of applying for the next credential level. ICF Credentials and Standards will be supporting ongoing updates to the ICF Credentialing Exam. ICF Credential-holders who apply for a higher level credential in the future may see different forms of the exam to be completed at each Credential level. Note: Beginning November 18, 2024, and until March 14, 2025, ACC Candidates will have the opportunity to take either the ACC Exam or the ICF Credentialing Exam.  Individuals who pass the ACC Exam will need to take the ICF Credentialing Exam regardless of when they passed the ACC Exam.

  • Do I need more coaching education or CCEs to apply for the PCC Credential?

    For the PCC, you need a total of 125 hours of Coach-specific education. If the education you used for your ACC was for 125 hours, then no, you do not need to have any additional coach education. If your ACC original education was for less than 125, then yes, you will need have additional coach education to add to your ACC education hours until you reach the 125 hours needed.

  • For my PCC application, can I use the Mentor Coaching that I received for my ACC Credential?

    If your ACC mentoring was done with a PCC or a MCC credentialed coach, you do NOT need additional mentor coaching for your PCC application.  If it was done by an ACC credentialed coach, you will need an additional 10 hours of mentor coaching done over 3-month period of time or longer.

  • Can my education/ experience hours from my ACC Credential application be used in my PCC Credential application?

    Yes – to move from the ACC to the PCC, you may build up from the hours you had for your ACC until you reach the PCC required amounts.  The same hours can be used for both your ACC and PCC applications.

  • If I hold an ACC credential, how do I apply for the PCC credential?

    There is no special process or application to move from the ACC to the PCC.  You will use the PCC application for the path through which you will be applying. Each credential application is reviewed independently and due to data privacy laws, we do not store previously entered materials.  To apply for your PCC, you will need to upload/enter in all documents/information you wish to use towards your PCC, including those previously for your ACC.

• Credential Certificate

  • How do I access the digital version of my credential certificate? 

    A link to download your certificate was included in the email you received awarding your credential.     In addition, you may access the certificate on your ICF Profile, under the “My Account Links” section – click on “Credentialing” and there will be an option labeled "Credential Certificate" under "Quick Links". 

  • Will I get a physical copy of my credential certificate? 

    No.  However, in the email you receive awarding you your credential, there will be a link to download your certificate and then you may print it out. 

• Credential Logo

  • Where can I get my credential logo?

    A link to download your credential logo was included in the email you received awarding your credential.  If the email is no longer available to you, please contact ICF Support to request the logo. 

• Credential Pin

  • Can I order a replacement lapel pin?

    Yes. For those who have already received their pin but have either lost it and would like to replace it or would like to have a pin featuring the ICF’s new branding (released in 2021), pins are now available for purchase - $10 USD (including shipping). Order yours today! 

  • When will I receive my credential lapel pin?

    Credential pins are mailed the following month the credential was awarded.   Please allow 6 – 10 weeks from when your credential was awarded for the pin to arrive.   If after 10 weeks the pin has not arrived, please check the mailing address in your ICF profile.  If all is correct, please reach out to ICF Support to check on the status on the status of your pin.    NOTE: ICF is not able to track the pin once it has been shipped.

• About Credential Digital Badges

  • Why does Credly need access to my LinkedIn account?

    To share or add a badge to your LinkedIn profile, LinkedIn requires an authorization process, that is required and standard for all third-party programs creating a connection between the two accounts.     When you connect your Credly and LinkedIn accounts, you will receive a message outlining the permissions you are granting in the process. LinkedIn predetermines this message based on the authorization scope required to share your badge. Credly will not post to LinkedIn without your initiation or permission. Credly will only add badges to your profile or post them to your newsfeed upon request.   You can disconnect Credly’s access to your social media account after you have successfully shared your badge to your profile or newsfeed. You can also manage Credly’s connection through your privacy settings within your social media account. 

  • What is an open badge?

    Open badges are web-enabled versions of a credential, certification or learning outcome which can be verified in real-time, online.   What’s to keep someone else from copying my badge and using it? While badges are simply digital image files, they are uniquely linked to data hosted on Credly’s Acclaim Platform. This link to verified data makes them more reliable and secure than a paper-based certificate. It also eliminates the possibility of anyone claiming your credential and your associated identity. 

  • What if I don’t want my badge to be public?

    You can easily configure your privacy settings in the Credly Platform. You’re in complete control of the information about yourself that is made public. 

  • What are the benefits of a badge?

    Representing your skills as a badge gives you a way to share your abilities online in a way that is simple, trusted and can be easily verified in real time. Badges provide clients, employers and peers concrete evidence of what you had to do to earn your credential and what you’re now capable of. 

  • How does my certification get displayed as a badge?

    We have partnered with Credly to translate the learning outcomes you’ve demonstrated into a badge, issued and managed through the company’s Acclaim Platform. The technology Credly uses on its Acclaim Platform is based on the Open Badge Standards maintained by IMS Global. This enables you to manage, share and verify your competencies digitally. 

  • Who is Credly?

    Credly is the end-to-end solution for issuing and managing digital credentials. Credly works with credible organizations to provide digital credentials to individuals, worldwide.  

  • What is digital badging, and why is it important?

    Digital badging helps ensure that all credentialing and your hard work as a coach is validated. ICF digital badges validate your Associate Certified Coach, Professional Certified Coach and Master Certified Coach credential.   According to the 2020 ICF Global Coaching Study, coaches say the No. 1 obstacle for the coaching profession is untrained individuals who call themselves coaches. Digital badging gives ICF Credential-holders a way to share their knowledge, skills and abilities online in a way that is simple and trusted and can be easily verified in real time.

• How to Use Digital Badges

  • Where and how can I share my badge through the Credly Platform?

    You can share your badge directly from the Credly Platform to LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook; over email; embedded in a website or in your email signature.   Visit the Digital Badge Social Media page to learn more.  

  • Is there a fee to use Credly?

    No. This is a service we provide to ICF Credential-holders at no additional cost. 

  • I have a question about the Credly Platform. Where can I find support?

  • Can I export badges issued through Credly Platform to other badge-storing platforms?

    Yes, you can download your badge from the Share Badge page. Your downloaded badge contains Open Badge Infrastructure (OBI) compliant metadata embedded into the image. This allows you to store your badge on other OBI-compliant badge sites, such as the Mozilla backpack. 

  • Can I export badges issued through Credly Platform to other badge-storing platforms?

• New ICF Credentialing Exam

  • How do I take the new ICF Credentialing Exam online?

    In addition to delivery through the global network of Pearson VUE testing centers, the new ICF Credentialing Exam will also be available to candidates through Pearson’s OnVUE system. This system provides live, remote-proctored delivery of the exam. delivered on a secure platform. This remote proctoring provides the same high quality and security as an on-site test, all from the convenience of a candidate’s home or office.    The Pearson OnVUE system makes it easy to take the ICF Credentialing Exam online. However, it is important to plan ahead to ensure a successful exam experience. Detailed information about testing with Pearson’s OnVUE service, including resources on how to prepare and what to expect on exam day, is available on the ICF OnVUE webpage here. A brief video on the OnVUE testing experience can be viewed Pearson VUE’s Vimeo page.     Candidates will be required to provide a government-issued identification, along with photos of themselves and their testing environment on exam day. 

  • If I want to take the exam in-person, how will I find a testing center where I can take the ICF Credentialing Exam? 

    ICF Credentials and Standards is proud to partner with Pearson VUE for the delivery of the new ICF Credentialing Exam. Pearson VUE has a global network of more than 5,600 testing centers worldwide.   Once authorized for the exam, candidates will be able to easily search for testing centers located near them and can select up to three test centers to compare appointment availability. Candidates can also search for Pearson VUE test centers available for the ICF Credentialing Exam on the ICF Pearson VUE page.   

  • Will accommodations be available to support candidates with a disability or physical condition that may impact their ability to test?

    Yes. ICF Credentials and Standards is committed to supporting all candidates in pursuing an ICF Credential, including those who may need assistance in accessing the ICF Credentialing Exam due to a disability or other health condition. ICF Credentials and Standards provides reasonable accommodations to candidates with disabilities as defined by the Americans with Disability Act.     Candidates with a chronic health condition that may require medication, or a medical device are permitted to bring pre-approved comfort items with them to the testing center. For these items, a special accommodation request is not required. For a complete list of pre-approved comfort items, please review the Pearson VUE Comfort Aid List.   For other types of accommodation, including extra time or a separate testing room, candidates will need to complete a Special Accommodations Request Form prior to scheduling an exam appointment, along with the documentation of related needs.   • Is the ICF Credentialing Exams available in languages other than English?

  • Do I need to take the updated ICF Credentialing Exam to be listed on the Mentor Coach Registry?

    If you are currently listed on the Mentor Coach Registry, you will not be required to complete the updated ICF Credentialing Exam. Those applying for listing on the Mentor Coach Registry who have not completed an ICF Credentialing exam will be required to complete an exam to be listed.

  • Once I take the updated ICF Credentialing Exam, will I need to take it again, if I apply for another credential?

    At this time, the ICF Credentialing Exam must be taken with each new application for a Credential, even if the exam has already been passed. The ICF Credentialing Exam is part of the credential process. In alignment with the highest standards for credentialing bodies, each Credential is a stand-alone achievement and the applicant must complete all requirements for the Credential for which they applied.   ICF Credentials and Standards will be supporting ongoing updates to the ICF Credentialing Exam. ICF Credential-holders who apply for a higher level Credential in the future may see different forms of the exam to be completed at each Credential level as they apply. 

  • If I previously passed the Coach Knowledge Assessment (CKA) for a prior Credential, why do I have to take the new ICF Credentialing Exam when applying for a higher–level credential?

    The existing Coach Knowledge Assessment (CKA) has been delivered since 2014 through an online, on-demand format with very limited security measures. Because of this, the exam has accumulated high exposure since its original release.     Moreover, to comply with global standards for certification bodies and to ensure consistency, fairness and equity in the Credentialing process, it is important that each candidate applying for an ICF Credential completes each requirement. Given that ICF is launching a new ICF Credentialing Exam, it will be important for each candidate applying for a Credential to complete the same exam. This allows all candidates to be held to the same standards and requirements for the Credentialing process. 

  • Who needs to take the updated ICF Credentialing Exam? Do I need to take the exam again when I renew my ICF Credential?

    Those who submit a new or upgraded ICF Credential application after the launch of the new ICF Credentialing Exam (August 1, 2022) will be required to complete the new exam, even if they previously completed the CKA for a prior ICF Credential.     Individuals renewing (but not upgrading) an existing ICF Credential will not be required to take the new exam as part of the renewal process. 

  • If I studied for the CKA using the original 11 ICF Core Competencies, can I still pass the new ICF Credentialing Exam?

    The updated ICF Core Competencies still very much reflect the content and spirit of the original ICF Core Competencies—they are simply streamlined in structure and the wording has been revised and updated to improve clarity. The skills developed and the knowledge gained under the original model will apply under the updated ICF Core Competencies. The new ICF Credentialing Exam will feature new questions, but the content will remain very similar.     On the ICF Core Competencies page, a video and several webinars are available, discussing the differences between the two models. Additionally, on the ICF YouTube Channel, there is a series of webinars about each of the updated ICF Core Competencies featuring expert coach practitioners. These are excellent resources to understand how the original competency framework translates to the updated competencies. 

  • Will my Performance Assessments be evaluated in alignment with the updated ICF Core Competencies before the updated ICF Credentialing Exam is available?

    No. The transition to updated Performance Assessment criteria and the ICF Credentialing Exam will be implemented simultaneously.        Applicants who submit a complete ICF Credential application before July 27 at 11:59 p.m. EDT (New York) will be assessed on the original Core Competencies and tested with the existing Coach Knowledge Assessment (CKA).   Applicants who submit a complete ICF Credential application on or after the launch of the ICF Credentialing Exam (August 1, 2022) will be assessed on the updated ICF Core Competencies and tested with the new ICF Credentialing Exam.   

• Updated Credential Application Paths

  • Will Credential levels be changing from ACC, PCC and MCC to Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3?

    No. While a candidate’s coaching education provides an important foundation for their coaching practice, an ICF Credential reflects more than just the education or training a candidate has completed. An ICF Credential also reflects that the earner has the experience, knowledge and skill needed to meet the rising challenges facing today’s coach practitioners. ICF Credentials and Standards will continue to offer Credentials at the Associate Certified Coach (ACC), Professional Certified Coach (PCC), and Master Certified Coach (MCC) levels. 

  • Will Credential levels be changing from ACC, PCC and MCC to Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3?

    No. While a candidate’s coaching education provides an important foundation for their coaching practice, an ICF Credential reflects more than just the education or training a candidate has completed. An ICF Credential also reflects that the earner has the experience, knowledge and skill needed to meet the rising challenges facing today’s coach practitioners.   • Will the ACTP and ACSTH application paths be discontinued for ACC and PCC Credentials? 

    No. There are no plans to discontinue the ACTP and ACSTH application paths for ACC and PCC Credentials in the near future. As coaching education does not expire, application paths supporting ACTP and ACSTH graduates will continue to be available. 

  • I completed an ACTP program and currently have my ACC Credential. Can I still apply for the PCC Credential through an ACTP application path?

    Yes, candidates will still be able to apply for the PCC Credential via a Level 2 / ACTP application path. 

  • For my ACC Credential, I completed an ACSTH program that was less than 125 hours. Can I use CCEs to attain the 125 hours of coaching education required for a PCC Credential? 

    Yes, CCEs can be used to attain the 125 hours of coach-specific education required for a PCC Credential through the Portfolio application path. Many Level 2-accredited providers also allow the opportunity for participants to “transfer-in” their previous ICF-accredited coaching education and complete the additional Level 2 education hours/requirements which are designated as PCC-accredited education.      However, please be advised that CCEs tend to be more topic specific and may not meet Core Competency and synchronous learning requirements needed to earn a Credential.  Applicants using CCEs will need to ensure all education requirements are met.   • For my ACC Credential, I completed an Approved Coach Specific Training Hours (ACSTH) program that was less than 125 hours. Can I complete a Level 1 program to meet the 125 hours of coaching education required for the PCC Credential? 

    Candidates for the PCC Credential must have completed at least 125 hours of coaching education. If the total combined hours of the initial ACSTH program plus the Level 1 program are equal to or greater than 125 hours of coaching education, a candidate would meet the educational requirements for the PCC Credential.     If the total combined hours of the initial ACSTH program plus the Level 1 program are less than 125 hours of coaching education, the candidate would need additional coaching education hours to be eligible for PCC.     Candidates who complete a combination of ACSTH and Level 1 courses to meet the coaching education requirements for PCC would apply via the PCC – Level 1 / ACSTH application path.    It is important to note, however, that Level 1 accreditation is designed to prepare students to coach at the ACC level, while the Level 2 accreditation is designed to prepare students to coach at the PCC level.   

  • When I am ready to apply for the Master Certified Coach (MCC) Credential, will I be required to receive education or training from a Level 3-accredited organization or program?

    No. As part of its recent Evolution of Accreditation changes, ICF Coaching Education established a Level 3 accreditation for educational programs designed specifically to prepare candidates for the Master Certified Coach (MCC) Credential. Level 3 accreditations support candidates who wish to pursue the MCC Credential with learning opportunities for the development of skills at the highest level. However, candidates for the MCC Credential are not required to complete an ICF-accredited Level 3 program to qualify for the MCC Credential.     The coach-specific educational requirement for the MCC Credential is the completion of at least 200 hours of coaching education. While the Level 3 accreditation is designed to prepare students to coach at the MCC level, candidates can meet the educational requirements for the MCC Credential by completing a range of coach-specific educational programs, including ICF- accredited and non-accredited programs. 

  • I am preparing to apply for the Professional Certified Coach (PCC) Credential and have already completed 125 hours of coach-specific education. Do I now need to take a Level 2-accredited program? 

    No. The coach-specific educational requirements for the PCC Credential require completion of at least 125 hours of coaching education. While Level 2 accreditations are designed to prepare students to coach at the PCC level, candidates can meet the educational requirements for the PCC Credential by completing a range of coach-specific educational programs, including ICF-accredited and non-accredited programs. As long as a candidate has completed at least 125 hours of coach-specific education that is aligned with the ICF Definition of Coaching, ICF Core Competencies and ICF Code of Ethics, they meet the educational requirements and are eligible to apply for the PCC Credential.   

  • I completed an ICF-Accredited education or training program years ago for my initial ICF Credential. If I pursue a higher-level Credential in the future, will my previous ACTP or ACSTH education/training still be recognized?  

    Yes, any previous ICF-accredited coach-specific education or training that you have completed will continue to be recognized and count toward the coaching education requirements for an ICF Credential. Your past training and/or education does not expire. 

  • Updates to the ICF Coaching Education accreditation structure indicate that Continuing Coach Education (CCE) programs should not be designed for initial coach-specific education. Does this mean that Credential candidates will no longer be able to use CCE units to meet the education requirements through the Portfolio Application Path? 

    No. ICF Credentials and Standards will continue to support candidates who use Continuing Coach Education (CCE) or non-ICF accredited programs to meet the educational requirements for an ICF Credential through the Portfolio Application Pathway for ACC, PCC and MCC Credentials. 

• Updated Performance Evaluation Criteria

  • The ICF Core Competencies were updated in 2019. Why are the ICF Credentialing Exam and Performance Evaluation criteria only coming into alignment in 2022?

    In November 2019, the updated ICF Core Competencies were released. At that time, the intention was for education and training programs to begin teaching the updated competencies in early 2021, and for the updated competencies to be implemented into the credentialing process with the Performance Assessments and Credentialing Exam in 2021.    Unfortunately, COVID-19 disrupted the timeline for the implementation of the updated Performance Assessments and Credentialing Exam. However, it did not change ICF’s commitment to ensuring these aspects of the credentialing process are done to the highest standards; it just pushed back our timeline.    ICF Credentials and Standards has been engaged in work with the Human Resources Research Organization (HumRRO) since late 2019 to develop a new ICF Credentialing Exam that reflects and integrates the updated ICF Core Competencies. This new Credentialing Exam will replace the Coach Knowledge Assessment (CKA).     In January 2022, ICF Credentials and Standards and our partners at HumRRO completed a global pilot of the new ICF Credentialing Exam, through which ICF Credential holders and candidates around the world completed the ICF Credentialing Exam in Pearson VUE testing centers. This pilot has provided critical data to help ensure exam questions are performing to psychometric standards and to assist ICF in developing scoring standards for the exam.     Additionally, in partnership with our Academic Research team, external research consultants and a number of subject matter expert (SME) volunteers, we have also been engaged in several efforts to update the ICF Credentialing Performance Evaluation process at all three levels of Credentialing — ACC, PCC, and MCC.   

  • Why are the Credential application fees increasing?

    The ICF Credentialing application fees have not changed since 2015. The price adjustments being implemented cover the additional expense incurred by providing the exam in a more secure delivery format, which provides greater integrity and value for ICF Credentials.

• About CCEs

  • I teach a coaching program, can I use that for my renewal?

    Serving as an instructor of ICF-accredited education program is accepted for renewal.  You may only claim the number of hours taught for a one-time delivery of content.  You will need to provide a letter from your supervisor on the training organization’s letterhead that states your name, your role within the organization, the name of the course you taught, date you taught it and the number of hours taught. 

  • Can I earn Core Competencies Continuing Coach Education (CCE) with self-study?

    Any course taken as self-study is considered Resource Development CCE. 

  • What is an example of self-study Continuing Coach Education (CCE)?

    Listening to an Archived Virtual Education session or a recording of an ICF Event are examples of self-study CCE.  

  • How can I find out if the education program I completed is ICF-accredited?

    The organization where you completed your program can provide that information. You may also use our Educational Search Service (ESS), and search by the organization’s name. If the organization has an accredited program, it will be listed in our ESS. 

  • Can I submit training that is not ICF-accredited as Continuing Coach Education (CCE)? What if it is not accepted?

    You may submit training that has not been accredited in advance by the ICF involving live, voice-to-voice interaction between instructors and students as CCE, but there is no guarantee that it will be accepted as CCE.  If your training is not accepted, your credential renewal application will remain “in process” to allow you time to complete CCE that meets our credential renewal requirements. 

  • What is Resource Development? 

    Training, writing, research, or self-study outside of the ICF Core Competencies that contributes to the professional development of a coach.   

  • What counts as Core hours?

    Activities that can be core competency CCEs include advanced coach education in a live or interactive setting, published writing related to the core competencies, mentoring/supervision, and facilitation of an ICF-accredited education program. 

  • What is Continuing Coach Education (CCE)?

    Continuing Coach Education (CCE) is defined as an activity that promotes your continued growth as a coach. CCE is divided into two categories: Core Competencies and Resource Development. Continuing Coach Education (CCE) units are earned upon completing Continuing Coach Education. 

• About Credential Renewal

  • Do I need additional Coaching Experience hours to renew?

    No. Only activities supporting your continued professional development as a coach are required. 

  • Do I have to take the ICF Credentialing Exam to renew my credential?

    No. An Exam is not required for credential renewals. 

  • If I complete more than the required Continuing Coach Education (CCE) units for credential renewal, can I use the excess hours for a future credential renewal?

    No. You may only submit CCE units completed since the initial award of your credential or since your last credential renewal.  Once a renewal has been awarded, you will need to start collecting new CCEs for your next renewal cycle. 

  • I renewed my membership. Do I still have to renew my credential?

    ICF Membership renewal and ICF Credential renewal are independent of each other. Membership is active for 12 months can be set to automatically-renew each year based upon your membership start date. ICF Credentials are renewed every three years. Your exact credential expiration date may be found on your ICF Credential certificate. 

  • Can I upgrade my credential instead of renewing?

    It is not possible to upgrade to a higher credential via the credential renewal application. If you wish to pursue a higher credential, you will need to submit that individual credential application.   To move forward with applying for a higher credential you will take the Credential Path Survey. At the end of the survey, it will tell you the path you are eligible to apply through and a link to start the new credential application.  

  • How long is the review time of a credential renewal application?

    The timeline for review is 4-6 weeks. 

  • How early can I submit by credential renewal?

    You can submit your renewal application as early as 10 months prior to your expiration date. 

  • Can I access my renewal application and enter in my CCEs as I earn them?

    Yes. Access to your renewal application can be found at the bottom of your ICF profile and is available to you once you have been credentialed or your last renewal has been awarded.   In the “My Credentials” section – click on the link “Credential Renewal Application.”  On the Continuing Coach Education Tab, click on the blue “Enter Training Hours” to enter in your CCE information.  Any information and documents uploaded will be saved once entered.  

  • How can I find out when my credential is due for renewal?

    Your credential expiration date may be found on your ICF Credential certificate provided when your credential was awarded or renewed. ICF Members may access their credential information by visiting their ICF profile.   Your credential information and access to your renewal application is found at the very bottom of the profile page. 

• Documentation

  • How do I document giving or receiving Coach Supervision in my renewal application?

    To claim Coaching Supervision hours toward the Continuing Coach Education (CCE) requirements for credential renewal, you will provide the name of the Coach Supervisor/Supervisee, their email address, the total number of hours of supervision, and the start and end date of the supervision. 

  • How do I document giving or receiving Mentor Coaching in my renewal application?

    In the online renewal application, you will be asked to list the name of the Mentor Coach/Mentee, their email address, their ICF Credential, the start and end date of the mentoring relationship, and the number of hours spent mentoring and if any of those hours were in group

  • How do I document self-study hours in my renewal application?

    Self-study hours can be recorded onto a word document. You will need to provide what kind of training or self-study you did, when you did it, and how many hours you are claiming for the self-study. For each hour of study, you can claim 1 CCE unit as Resource Development. 

  • How do I count non-ICF accredited education towards Core hours?

    You will be required to complete a Verification of Training form as part of your renewal application which will require submitting the curriculum of the non-accredited training. ICF Coaching Education staff will review the curriculum to determine if it is eligible for core hours. 

  • I participated in a number of ICF Chapter Events. Why aren’t they showing in my Credential renewal application?

    Chapter Events are individual events sponsored by the Chapters.  They are required to provide a certificate of completion for you to upload with your credential renewal application. 

  • I completed courses in the ICF Learning portal.  Why aren’t they showing in my Credential renewal application?

    Currently, the ICF Learning Portal is not connected with the credentialing system.  Therefore, you are required to download your transcript from the Learning Portal and upload it to your application.   Please visit the Learning Portal’s FAQ page for the steps to download your transcript.  

  • I completed the ICF Ethics course to meet the Ethics requirements for renewing my credential. How can I access my certificate / credits to upload to my renewal application?

    The ICF Ethic course is offered through the ICF Learning Portal.  The ICF Learning Portal is not connected with the credentialing system.  Therefore, you are required to download your transcript from the Learning Portal and upload it to your renewal application to document your completion of the Ethics course.   Please visit the Learning Portal’s FAQ page for the steps to download your transcript.  

• Mentor Coaching / Coach Supervision

  • Can Coaching Supervision take the place of Mentor Coaching for an ACC Credential renewal?

    Not at this time. Given Coaching Supervision’s broader focus to include supporting the coach and sharing wisdom as compared to Mentor Coaching’s focus on a coach’s skill in the ICF Core Competencies, only Mentor Coaching is accepted to meet the Mentor Coaching requirements for an ICF Credential and its renewal. 

  • Can two ACCs mentor each other for credential renewal?

    Yes, you can serve as another ACC’s mentor, and they in turn can mentor you. Both ACCs need to have renewed their credential at least one time for this exchange to be eligible. 

  • Do I have to complete an additional 10 hours of Mentor Coaching each time I renew my ACC Credential?

    Yes.  ACC Credentialed coaches are required to complete an additional 10 hours of Mentor Coaching following the initial award of their credential or since their last credential renewal. This requirement is intended to promote continued growth as a coach and help move you to the next credential level. 

  • Does Coaching Supervision count towards CCEs?

    Yes.  Up to 10 hours of Coaching Supervision (giving or receiving) may use towards the Core Competencies hours needed. 

  • Does Mentor Coaching count towards CCEs?

    Yes.  At the ACC level, 10 hours of received Mentor Coaching is required for each renewal.  At the PCC and MCC level, up to 10 hours of Mentor Coaching (giving or receiving) may use towards the Core Competencies hours needed.   

• Requirements

  • My ICF Credential expired two YEARS ago. Can I still Renew?

    Once a Credential has been expired for over a year, it is no longer available to be renewed.  To reinstate the Credential, you will need to reapply for the Credential or, if ready, apply for the next level Credential. 

  • My ICF Credential expired two months ago. Can I still renew?

    ICF does provide a 2-month grace period during which your Credential will remain active. However, if you are unable to submit your Credential renewal application within those 2 months, your Credential will lapse, and you will no longer be able to use the Credential logo. You will still have a full year from your expiration date to renew your Credential but you will have to provide additional CCE's for each lapsed month.  Visit the Renewal Information page for full details and the additional CCEs needed for each month lapsed. 

  • Where can I access the free ICF Ethics Course?

    The free ICF Ethics Course is available in the ICF Learning Portal.    NOTE: To record the completion of the course, you will need to download your Learning Portal transcript and upload it to your renewal application.  

  • Where can I find CCEs?

  • What do I need to renew my MCC?

    To renew your MCC Credential you will need 40 CCEs.  Of the 40 CCEs, 24 must be in Core Competencies (of which 3 must be in Ethics).  The remaining 16 may be in Core Competencies or Resource Development. 

  • What do I need to renew my PCC?

    To renew your PCC Credential you will need 40 CCEs.  Of the 40 CCEs, 24 must be in Core Competencies (of which 3 must be in Ethics).  The remaining 16 may be in Core Competencies or Resource Development. 

  • What do I need to renew my ACC?

    To renew your ACC Credential you will need 40 CCEs.  Of the 40 CCEs, 24 must be in Core Competencies (of which 3 must be in Ethics and 10 must be in receiving Mentor Coaching).  The remaining 16 may be in Core Competencies or Resource Development.

• Client Coaching Experience Hours

  • Does group / team coaching count toward the experience requirements?

    Yes, coaching groups or teams of 15 or less participants can count towards the experience requirements. Groups/Team with more than 15 participants may count if a co-coach is present.  If a co-coach is present, then the coaching time will be split between the coaches

  • I coach for my work – does that count as paid coaching hours?

    Yes, if your job responsibilities include providing coaching, those hours are considered internal coaching and can be used as paid hours. 

  • Do I upload my client log to my ICF Credential application?

    Due to data privacy laws you do not upload your client coaching log to ICF.  You will report to on your application the total number of coaching hours you have and attest that you have obtained them in accordance with the requirements.   If you are selected for an audited, you (not ICF) will reach out to your clients asking them to verify back to ICF your coaching hours with them. 

  • Can I use coaching hours from before I completed an ICF-accredited program?

    You may use any client coaching hours you have done as the start of a program that is at least 30 hours in length of which 24 hours are in ICF Core Competencies.  This includes if the program was not ICF accredited.     However, to use experience hours in your total for an ACC or PCC, you will need to apply through the Portfolio application.  For all levels, you will need to supply robust student documentation to demonstrate that you meet the education requirement and establish the program as your coach education start date.  Visit the Education Requirements page to learn more.  

  • Can Coaching Supervision or Mentor Coaching be counted toward client coaching experience hours?

    No. Both Mentor Coaching and Coaching Supervision include elements of offering feedback, instruction, and guidance. 

  • How can I sign up for the Reciprocal Peer Coaching program?

    The Reciprocal Peer Coaching program is a wonderful resource for ICF members who are looking to build their experience.   This program is available to ICF members, and you may find information on the program and how to access it when signed into the website.   Sign into the website, or if signed in, click on your name in the upper right-hand corner.  Either of those actions will set the gray navigation bar to the "member only" items. Towards the end of the gray bar, click on the "Peer Coaching" header and that will bring you to the "Reciprocal Peer Coaching" information page.  

  • How do I keep track of my coaching hours? Where is the Client Log Template?

    For Individual Clients, you should document the following: client name, client contact information you use to reach them (e.g. email address or phone number), start and end date of the coaching relationship, number of paid and pro bono hours that you coached the client.   Individual clients who do not consent to have their names listed must be left off of the log. The consent should be documented in compliance with all relevant laws (e.g., GDPR).   If you wish, you may use the Client Coaching Template found at the bottom the Coaching Experience page.   Visit the Coaching Experience page to learn more about document for group/team coaching, internal and third-party coaching.  

  • What constitutes a Coaching hour? How do I count my time spent coaching?

    A client coaching hour is 60 minutes of actual coaching with a client who has hired you as a coach and not in any other capacity.     NOTE: Mentor coaching, coaching supervision, and time spent going over assessments with clients are not accepted as a client coaching.   Client coaching sessions of less than 60 minutes will count as partial client coaching hours. For example, 30 minutes of client coaching will count as 0.5 client coaching hours. Coaching must be done in person or by telephone or other technology that allow for real time interaction between coach and client.   Coaching groups of 15 or less may be used for towards the experience hours requirement.  You cannot multiply hours times participants in the group. If you coach 15 people for one hour, you can only count that as one hour of coaching, not 15 hours.  

  • What is considered “paid” coaching hours?

    Paid hours include:  

    • Hours of coaching for which the coach receives payment from the client (payment may be in any amount, or barter of goods or services, including coaching in exchange for coaching)  
    • Internal coaching (your job responsibilities at work include providing coaching)  
    • Third-party coaching (you were hired by an organization to provide coaching)  

    NOTE: Students, trainers, supervisors and mentors cannot claim coaching hours within an education or training program unless the coaching is delivered outside the classroom setting with an actual client and the coaching hours are not included in the total training hours or CCEs listed on the training certificate.  

  • What counts as client coaching experience hours?

    Four types of clients may be included in the experience hours: individual clients, group clients, internal clients, and third-party clients.  Coaching must be done in person or by telephone or other technology that allows for real time interaction between coach and client.   Please visit the Coaching Experience page for full details on the client types and how to document your coaching of them.  

• Coaching Education

  • Can my clients make a donation to a charity in lieu of paying me?

    No. In order for a coaching session to be considered paid, the coach must receive compensation. In order to support a charity financially through your coaching, your clients would need to pay you, and then you may make the donation to the charity. 

  • If I completed part of an ICF Accredited Coach Training Program (ACTP) but not the full program, can I still use these training hours toward my Credential application?

    Yes, if the ACTP program issues you a certificate for the portion of the course you completed, you may use those hours towards your credential. The hours will be classified as ACSTH.  

  • Can I use CCEs to become credentialed?

    Yes. You will need to ensure that you are meeting the Education Requirements for the level to which you are applying.  You will apply through the Portfolio path for an ACC or PCC.   Visit the Education Requirements page to learn more. 

  • Do I have to use an ICF-accredited program to become credentialed?

    No.  If you use non-ICF accredited program(s) towards your credential education requirement, you will need to supply robust student documentation to show what you were taught and for how long and map any relevant teaching to the ICF Core Competencies to demonstrate that you are meeting the Education Requirements for the level to which you are applying.  You will apply through the Portfolio path for an ACC or PCC. 

  • How do I determine the accreditation type of coaching education program(s) I completed?

    You can check your program certificate.  Most will have included on their certificate if the program was ICF-accredited and if so the type of accreditation.      If you don’t see reference whether it was ICF-accredited, you may check the Education Search Service and use the last field to search for the program provider.   If no results appear, you may double check with ICF Coach Education.   Tip - In the Education Search Service, try leaving all the search criteria blank, click search, and then hold down the ‘Ctrl’ (or command if you use an Apple operation system) and ‘F’ keys to pull up a search box where you can do an exact word search on all the programs listed. 

  • After my education is complete, how long do I have to submit my application for a Credential?

    Coaching Education, Client Coaching Experience and Mentor Coaching hours do not expire.  You may apply for your credential whenever you are ready. 

  • Where can I find coaching education programs?

    Please visit the Education Search Service to find an ICF-accredited education program.

  • What is coach-specific education?

    Coach Specific Education is defined as:   

    • Education from an ICF-accredited Level 1, Level 2, Level 3, Accredited Coach Training Program (ACTP) or a program that has received the ICF Approved Coach Specific Training Hours (ACSTH) designation.  
    • Education or training from a Continuing Coach Education (CCE) Provider, ICF conference, ICF Community of Practice (CP) or ICF Chapter event.  
    • Education that has not been previously approved by ICF that is specifically marketed as teaching coaching skills or teaches how to apply technical skills in a coach-like manner and teaches coaching skills in accordance with the ICF definition of coaching, Core Competencies and Code of Ethics.

  • What is the difference between the Coach Knowledge Assessment (CKA) and the new ICF Credentialing Exam?

    Every applicant for an ICF Credential will be required to take a written examination. For those who submitted a Credential application prior to July 27, 2022, at 11:59 p.m. EDT (New York), your required examination is the CKA. For those who submitted a credential application on or after August 2, 2022, your required examination is the ICF Credentialing Exam. Learn more about each one in their respective FAQ sections. 

• Mentor Coaching

  • To apply for my PCC Credential, can I use the Mentor Coaching I received with my ACC Credential? Or for a renewal of my ACC Credential?

    If your ACC mentoring was done with a PCC or a MCC credentialed coach, you do NOT need additional mentor coaching for your PCC application. If it was done by an ACC credentialed coach, you will need an additional 10 hours of mentor coaching done over 3-month period of time or longer.    You cannot use the same mentor coaching hours for your credential renewal that you used for your initial application. 

  • Who is eligible to be a Mentor Coach? How do I join the Mentor Coach Registry?

    At this time the only requirement to be a mentor coach is that you are ICF credentialed* at the level someone is applying or higher.     *For ACC credentialed coaches, you must have been through at least one credential renewal cycle before you are eligible.   For Mentor’s who would like to be listed on the Mentor Coach Registry, please check out the eligibility requirements on the Mentor Coach Registry information page.  NOTE: You do not need to be on the Mentor Coach Registry in order to provide Mentor Coaching.  

  • Can Coaching Supervision take the place of Mentor Coaching?

    No. Coaching Supervision has a broad focus to include supporting the coach and sharing wisdom as compared to Mentor Coaching’s focus on a coach’s skill in the ICF Core Competencies. Therefore, only Mentor Coaching is accepted to meet the Mentor Coaching requirements for an ICF Credential or Credential renewal.  Learn more about Coaching Supervision. 

  • Is the time a Mentor Coach spends observing the Mentee’s coaching counted toward the 10 hours of Mentor Coaching?

    No. Only the time spent in feedback counts towards the 10-hour requirement for Mentor Coaching. 

  • What documentation needs to be submitted in the application for the Mentor Coaching hours?

    In your application, you will need to enter your Mentor’s name, email address, date of first session, date of last session, how many hours were completed and if any of those hours were in group. 

  • How do I find a Mentor Coach?

    You may visit the Mentor Coach Registry.   ​You do not need to use someone on the Registry.Any credentialed coach is a qualified mentor coach.  The only exception is for ACC credentialed coaches who must have been through at least one renewal cycle before they are eligible. Therefore, if you have a colleague who is credentialed and they are willing to mentor you, that would be acceptable.  Visit the Mentor Coach page to access the Mentor Coach Duties and Competencies. 

  • Who can I use as my Mentor Coach?

    Currently, the only requirement to be a mentor coach is that they are ICF credentialed at the level someone is applying or higher. For ACC credentialed coaches, they must have been through at least one credential renewal before they are eligible to offer mentoring. 

  • Does group mentoring count toward the mentor coaching requirement?

    Of the 10-hour requirement, 3 hours must be one-on-on.  The remaining seven (7) hours may be one-on-one or done in a group. 

  • Can I be mentored by more than one person?

    Yes, you may use more than one mentor.  You will need to include mentoring information in your application for each mentor. 

  • What is Mentor Coaching?

    Mentor Coaching is narrowly focused on developing coaching skills as they relate to the ICF Core Competencies. The Mentor will observe (live or recorded sessions of the Mentee) client coaching sessions and then the Mentor and Mentee will get together to discuss the skills utilized in the session. 

• Performance Evaluation (Recording and Transcript)

  • If I do not pass the evaluation, what happens?

    Candidates who do not earn a pass score on their Performance Evaluation have two options to proceed with their credentialing application. Performance Evaluation Retake Option - Candidates submit a new performance evaluation recording and accompanying transcript(s) within 6 months of their results notice. The retake fee is $150 USD per recording. Retake fees are non-refundable. Performance Evaluation Rescore Option - Candidates request a rescore of their original recording(s) and transcript(s) within six months of the date of their results notice. Only one rescore per performance evaluation recording is permitted.  The rescore fee is $150 USD per recording. In cases where the rescore results in a passing score, the candidate will receive a refund of the rescore fee. Additional details and instructions for the retake process will be found on the performance evaluation results notice.   v

  • Where can I find my performance evaluation feedback from the assessor?

    The assessor(s) will provide feedback on your submitted coaching session(s) regardless of if you passed or not.  You may access the feedback from inside your Credential application towards the bottom of the Performance Evaluation tab(s).  You will receive an email when the feedback is available.     You may access your application by signing into your ICF Profile.  

  • How is the assessment scored?

    Please visit the Minimum Skills page to learn more about what the assessors are looking for at each level. 

  • How do I transcribe my audio file?

    The transcript must be verbatim, word-for-word text and also indicate who is speaking—the coach or the client—at any time in the conversation. It must list the coach’s statements and the client’s statements on separate lines. It must also include timestamps at every change in speaker (coach and client).  The transcript needs to be uploaded in Word document format.   You can conduct an Internet search using a phrase like “Transcription service” or “audio recording transcription” or “interview transcription services” in order to find a service provider.   Visit the Performance Evaluation page for full details on Transcript  

  • Can I submit a recording in my own language?

    Yes.  The session submitted is to be with an actual client of yours.  Therefore, it should be conducted in whatever language the client is most comfortable in.     NOTE: Transcripts need to be in the same language used in your recording. If ICF does not offer a performance evaluation in your language, you will need to submit a transcript with the language used in your recording and an English translation of the transcript.    View the credential level section on the Performance Evaluation page to review the languages available for the credential level for which you are applying. 

  • Can I submit a session from the Reciprocal Peer Coaching program?

    Yes.  As you are matched with another coach for several sessions, they are considered to be a regular client. 

  • For the 2 recordings at the PCC and MCC levels, do they both need to be in the same language?

    No.  Each recorded session may be in a different language. 

  • For the two (2) recordings required at the PCC and MCC levels, can the recordings be done with the same client?

    Yes.  You may submit two different recorded sessions with the same client. 

  • If my client is also a coach, is that okay?

    As long as the client on the is a regular client of yours, you may submit the session, even if the client is also coach.  A regular client is anyone who comes to you for coaching and for no other purpose. 

  • How long does the recording need to be?

    Between 20 and 60 minutes.

• Credentialing Exam General Information

  • How many questions are on the exam?

    The test is comprised of approximately 81 scenario-based items. For each item, candidates will be asked to select the best action and then select the worst action among the options provided for that scenario. 

  • Is feedback provided regarding the questions missed?

    An exam score is provided, along with the candidate's overall result. Feedback on individual exam items is not provided. 

  • Are there sample questions available for review?

  • How should I prepare to take the ICF Credentialing Exam?

    Read through the ICF Core Competencies and the ICF Code of Ethics.  Review the sample questions provided.  Reviewing your coach specific education, in particular the sections that cover the Core Competencies and Ethics is the best way to prepare for the ICF Credentialing Exam.  

  • What do the exam questions cover?

    The ICF Credentialing Exam content covers four broad domains: Foundation, Co-Creating the Relationship, Communicating Effectively, and Cultivating Learning and Growth.  All questions are based on the ICF Core Competencies, ICF Code of Ethics and ICF’s Definition of Coaching. 

  • I finished the exam. Can I access the answers to advance my growth as a coach?

    An exam score is provided, along with candidate's overall result. Feedback on incorrect individual test items is not provided.

  • What happens if a candidate does not pass the ICF Credentialing Exam on their first attempt?

    Candidates who do not pass an ICF exam on their first attempt may retake the exam. Each exam retake is subject to the ICF exam retake fee of $105 USD, which covers the cost of exam administration with ICF test delivery partners. Candidates must wait 14 days following their first attempt to retake an exam. For any subsequent attempts, candidates must wait 30 days to retake the exam following their most recent attempt. Candidates may take an ICF exam up to six times within a 12-month (365-day) period following the date of their first attempt. Candidates who do not achieve a passing score within the first 12-month period are eligible to retake the exam up to six times during each subsequent 12-month (365-day) period that begins on the anniversary of the candidate’s initial exam attempt.

  • What score is required to pass the exam?

    The passing score and all exam results on the ICF Credentialing Exam are reported as scaled scores. The range of possible scores is 200 to 600, with a passing score of 460. 

  • If I previously passed the Coach Knowledge Assessment (CKA) for a prior Credential, why do I have to take the new ICF Credentialing Exam when applying for a higher level Credential?

    The Coach Knowledge Assessment (CKA) has been delivered since 2015 through an online, on-demand format with limited security measures. Because of this, the exam has accumulated high exposure since its original release.   To comply with global standards for certification bodies and to ensure consistency, fairness and equity in the Credentialing process, it is important that each candidate applying for an ICF Credential complete each requirement. Given that ICF is launching a new ICF Credentialing Exam, it will be important for each candidate applying for a Credential to complete the same exam. This allows all candidates to be held to the same standards and requirements for the Credentialing process. 

  • Who needs to take the ICF Credentialing Exam? Do I need to take the exam when I renew my ICF Credential?

    Those who submit an ICF Credential application for the PCC or MCC level are required to complete the ICF Credentialing Exam, unless the exam has been passed within 12 months of applying for the next credential level. Beginning November 18, 2024, and until March 14, 2025, ACC Candidates will have the opportunity to take either the ACC Exam or the ICF Credentialing Exam.  After March 14, 2025, all ACC Candidates will take the ACC Exam. Individuals renewing an ICF Credential are not required to take the exam as part of the renewal process.

  • How did ICF determine three hours was sufficient to complete the exam?

    The total exam time is based on exam completion time data collected through a pilot of the ICF Credentialing Exam and is consistent with other situational judgement certification exams of similar length. 

• Taking the ICF Credentialing Exam

  • How will I be notified of my results?

    Once an applicant completes the ICF Credentialing Exam, results are compiled and provided immediately to the applicant via the testing site. One week after completion of the ICF Credentialing Exam, applicants will receive official notification from ICF Credentials and Standards regarding the status of the credential application. 

  • Is the exam available in my language?

    The ICF Credentialing Exam is offered in English with language aids in other languages.      If needed, candidates may request translation support accommodation.  Learn more in the Language section of the Credentialing Exam Content page.  

  • What is the question format?

    The test is comprised of approximately 81 scenario-based items that will test the candidate’s knowledge of the ICF Core Competencies and how to apply them in realistic coaching scenarios. Each item contains a realistic scenario describing a coaching situation, followed by four response options. For each item, candidates will be asked to select the best action and the worst action among the options provided for that scenario. There will be one “correct” answer for each question. 

  • If I miss my appointment or deadline to take the ICF Credentialing Exam, can I still take the exam, or will I need to reapply?

    Candidates who are unable to take the exam at their scheduled exam appointment time are requested to cancel or reschedule their appointment at least 48 hours prior to the original appointment time, in alignment with Pearson Rescheduling and Cancellation policies. Those unable to cancel or reschedule at least 48 hours in advance will be subject to the forfeiture of exam fees. Candidates who miss their exam appointment will not be required to reapply, but may be subject to the ICF Credentialing Exam retake fee to schedule a new appointment. The retake fee is $105 USD. 

  • How much time is needed for the exam?

    The ICF Credentialing Exam is a three-hour exam, delivered by computer in a testing center or through Pearson’s OnVUE remote proctored testing service. The total exam time is organized into the following sections:   Section 1: Candidate Non-Disclosure Agreement (untimed)   Section 2: Introduction & Instructions (3 minutes)   Section 3: Exam Items (177 minutes)   Candidates should plan for a half hour to complete the check-in process (in person or online) prior to their scheduled exam time.  

  • Once I receive the notice that I may take the exam, how long do I have to take the exam?

    You are given 60 days to schedule and complete the ICF Credentialing Exam. During the exam appointment, you will have three hours to complete the exam. 

  • Where do I find the link to schedule my exam?

    Once you have receive notice that you are eligible to take the exam, on your ICF profile, towards the bottom of your profile page, in the “My Applications” section, your credential application will be listed.  There you will find next to "Continue Application" link - is a link for "Exam Information.” 

  • When will I be given access to the Exam?

    You will receive an email invitation to schedule your exam once your application review is complete.  The estimated time for review varies by credential application level and type.  Please check the credential information page for the level applied to find the estimated time of review for the application path you followed (ACC, PCC, MCC).

  • What training or certifications do I need to be a Mentor Coach?

    To renew your listing on the Mentor Coach Registry, access your ICF profile.  On your profile, on the right side of the screen, you will see "My Account Links".  Click “My Certifications” where you will see a link to renew your listing. 

  • How do I update my listing on the mentor coach registry?

    The information listed on the Mentor Coach Registry pulls from your ICF profile.     To change your qualifications for mentor coaching, you will need to click the “Edit Demographics” button which can be found in the middle section of the page under your contact information.  

  • Do I need to take the New ICF Credentialing Exam in order to be listed on the registry?

    To be eligible for listing on the Mentor Coach Registry, you will need to have passed the new ICF Credentialing Exam.  If you need to take the ICF Credentialing Exam, please reach out to customer support to request the exam for the purpose of joining the Mentor Coach Registry.  The fee for the Exam is $105 USD.

  • I get a message indicating that I am not eligible to be listed on the registry, but I believe I am.  What do I do?

    Please reach out to Credentialing Support.  We will review your record to locate what is causing the message to appear. 

  • Do I have to join the Mentor Coach Registry to be a Mentor Coach?

    No.  You do not need to be on the Mentor Coach Registry in order to provide mentor coaching. 

  • How can I be listed on the Mentor Coach Registry?

    If you meet the requirements to be listed as a mentor coach on the Mentor Coach Registry (hold an ICF membership, have taken the ICF Credential Exam, have held your credential for 3 years) you can join the Registry by logging into the ICF website, or if signed in already, clicking your name in the upper right corner, and then click Mentor Coach Registry on the grey navigation bar.     There is an annual fee to be listed on the Registry.

  • How do I change my name on my ICF Record?

    Your name is not available for you to edit yourself on your profile.  If you have a name change or correction, please reach out to the Member Services Department with the request. 

  • Where do I find my renewal application?

    Access to your renewal application can be found at the bottom of your profile page and is available to you once you have been credentialed or your last renewal has been awarded. 

  • Where is the Client Coaching Log Template?

    It may be found at the bottom the Coaching Experience page. 

  • Where do I locate Performance Evaluation Feedback?

    The assessor(s) will provide feedback on your submitted coaching session(s).  You may access the feedback from inside your Credential application on the Performance Evaluation tab(s).  To access your application sign into your ICF profile, and it is located towards the bottom of the page.  You will be notified by email when the feedback is available. 

  • Where do I find the score report from the Exam?

    In your email results from Pearson VUE you will receive your score report that includes your exam score and overall result.  You may also find this information in your Pearson VUE profile.   To access, sign into your ICF Profile and next to your credential application click on “Exam Information.”  This will bring you to your Pearson VUE profile where you can find access to the score report. 

  • How do I check the status of my application?

    You may monitor your application’s review by signing into your ICF profile and accessing your credential application by clicking on “Continue Application.”  This will bring you to the applications dashboard and you can view the status of each section of the application. 

  • Where do I find the application I started, so I can complete it?

    Access to your application can be found towards the bottom of your ICF profile page. 

  • How do I create my credential application?

    To apply for your credential, you will need to click on "Credentials & Standards" in the menu bar and then on the "apply now" button on the resulting gray navigation bar and go through the short Credential Path Survey to get you to the right level and application type.   Take the Credential Path Survey
