Ten Little Tips to Boost Your Coaching Prowess
A large part of my passion and career has been about helping business and non-profit leaders in Asia to traverse the management continuum from command-and-control to a more inclusive and empowering style that’s epitomized by the transformational values and practice of coaching.
On this journey, I have had the occasional privilege of sitting at the feet of some of the most gifted coaches. They are masterful at what they do, and often to my surprise, many of their favourite moves are simple but powerful techniques that anyone can pick up and use right away to unlock insights and engineer breakthroughs in their own coaching conversations.
I figured out that these practical nuggets would be especially useful for managers who desire to get better at coaching and engage the energy of their employees, but so very often find themselves strapped for time, and defaulting to the easier and more convenient approach of “telling.”
Armed with this conviction, I went on to create an infographic that outlines ten little tips to boost one’s coaching prowess, and started offering this as a buffet spread of tools to my clients. At each coaching session, we would pull this out and my client gets to choose and practise one tip in his conversations that week. Just as Rome wasn’t built in a day, coaching muscles take time to develop, one conversation at a time. And there’s always a little bit of fun and excitement each time we get to this part of the coaching too!
So, here’s my little resource for anyone who is keen to energise and equip the leaders they work with by offering some innovative and easy-to-implement coaching techniques that go beyond the usual, run-of-the-mill listening and asking exercises. Enjoy!
