The 2019 ICF Core Competencies have provided a framework for coaching practices for the last six years. Every five to seven years, ICF revisits this framework to keep it up to date with changes in the coaching profession. The 2025 ICF Core Competencies are the updated standard. For those coaching candidates taking an exam for their credential, you will be tested on the 2019 Core Competencies.
The competencies emphasize ethical behavior, a strong coaching mindset, cultural awareness, and the importance of maintaining confidentiality. The competencies are structured around four core areas: Foundation, Co-Creating the Relationship, Communicating Effectively, and Cultivating Learning and Growth. Each section outlines specific behaviors and practices that contribute to successful coaching, including active listening, creating trust, facilitating client growth, and maintaining an open, reflective mindset.
This resource is valuable for coaches at all levels, providing a clear standard for professional development and performance evaluation. It helps coaches align their practices with current industry standards, ensuring they deliver high-quality, ethical coaching. Coaches pursuing ICF credentials or looking to enhance their coaching methods will find this updated competency model essential for both personal growth and client success.
