Tips for Coaches When Coaching Teams

Posted by Magda Snowden, PCC (United Arab Emirates) | June 4, 2024 | Comments (0)

Systemic team coaching operates on the principle that the team as a whole is greater than the sum of its parts. By addressing the dynamics, relationships, and collective behaviors within the team, systemic coaching facilitates a holistic approach to driving organizational change. It emphasizes the interconnectedness of team members and the influence of systemic factors on team performance.

One key advantage of systemic team coaching is its ability to address underlying systemic issues that may hinder team effectiveness. By identifying and addressing the root causes of dysfunction or inefficiency, systemic coaching enables teams to break free from entrenched patterns and foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.

6 Coaching Skills for Team Coaching

Coaching teams within organizations is an enriching experience that showcases the power of collective intelligence. As a Team Transformation Coach (TTC), I’ve learned invaluable lessons from my engagements, and I believe these insights can benefit other coaches looking to facilitate impactful team coaching sessions.

Prioritize Effective Communication and Diversity Navigation

One of the cornerstones of successful team coaching is effective communication. Emphasize the significance of clear, respectful communication among team members. Showcase how understanding and respecting diversity can lead to enhanced team dynamics and positive outcomes. Encourage open dialogue where team members feel heard and valued, regardless of their background or perspective. Acknowledge your own cultural background and uniqueness and your guidance will be much more powerful.

Celebrate Success and Acknowledge Achievements

Incorporate celebrations and acknowledgments into the coaching process. Recognizing even small achievements reinforces positive behavior and fosters a culture of appreciation within the team. Celebrating successes, whether individual or collective, boosts morale and reinforces the team’s commitment to growth and development. Reflecting on the most powerful team coaching event from my own practice, I can still visualize when the appreciation strengthened the relationship in the team and boosted the progress beyond expectations.

Foster an Empowering Mindset

Encourage individuals to recognize and embrace their own agency and control over their reactions. Help team members understand that they have the power to influence their environment and effect positive change. Empower them to take ownership of their actions and decisions, fostering a sense of accountability and empowerment within the team. However uncomfortable it might be at the initial stages for individuals to verbalize their individual strengths and collective intelligence, once you set the ball in motion, there is no going back. This encourages teams to be the change they want to see and take initiative instead of waiting on someone else to do it.

Encourage Adaptability and Attitude Shifts

Highlight the importance of adaptability and being open to different perspectives. Emphasize that changing one’s attitude and approach can transform challenges into opportunities for growth. Encourage team members to embrace change and view obstacles as learning experiences, fostering a resilient and forward-thinking mindset within the team. As a coach, it is our role to help the team leader and the team members embrace different perspectives and shift from autopilot to using curiosity to find solutions to the most complex and challenging tasks. As coaches, when we use curiosity for the best possible results for our clients, it allows them to do the same when navigating organizational transformations, interdepartmental communication, and their own responses. In the end, perception is projection.

Inspire Change Agents

Empower individuals to see themselves as change agents within their organization. Help them recognize their potential to contribute positively to the work environment and make a difference in the broader ecosystem. Cultivate a sense of purpose and agency within the team, motivating them to proactively seek solutions and drive positive change. Once the team embraces their own “why” and align it with the organizational goals, they can consciously choose to be the change agents and take accountability for the collective input.

Recognize Existing Capacity and Foster Growth

Acknowledge the inherent capacity within individuals and teams to expand their skills and make a meaningful impact. As a coach, recognize your role as a facilitator in unlocking this potential. Provide support, guidance, and resources to help individuals and teams flourish. Continuously refine your coaching skills and mindset to better serve your clients and create a lasting impact in the wider ecosystem.

Coaching teams within organizations presents a powerful avenue for fostering collaboration, enhancing performance, and driving positive change. As a seasoned coach, I’ve witnessed firsthand the transformative potential of systemic team coaching. However, drawing from my experience, I’ve come to realize that when combined with individual leadership coaching, the impact on organizational dynamics and outcomes can be even more profound.

Individual leadership coaching focuses on developing the skills, mindset, and behaviors of individual leaders within the organization. It provides personalized support and guidance tailored to the unique needs and goals of each leader, helping them unlock their full potential and become more effective agents of change.

In conclusion, coaching teams involves more than just imparting knowledge or skills — it’s about fostering a collaborative, empowering environment where individuals can thrive and contribute their best. By prioritizing effective communication, celebrating success, fostering an empowering mindset, and inspiring change, coaches can facilitate transformative experiences that benefit both individuals and organizations. Embrace the opportunity to facilitate growth and development within your teams and continue refining your coaching skills to maximize your impact.
