The ICF Core Competencies aren’t just standards; they’re the foundation that elevates coaching everywhere. These frameworks set the global standard for professional coaching, defining essential knowledge, skills, and behaviors that professional coaches need to deliver meaningful, results-driven coaching. Every five to seven years, ICF relies on an evidence-based approach to update the Core Competencies, using comprehensive analysis, extensive global research, and most importantly, direct input and feedback from coaches.

The competencies are structured around four core areas: Foundation, Co-Creating the Relationship, Communicating Effectively, and Cultivating Learning and Growth. Each section outlines specific behaviors and practices that contribute to successful coaching, including active listening, creating trust, facilitating client growth, and maintaining an open, reflective mindset.

This resource is valuable for coaches at all levels, providing a clear standard for professional development and performance evaluation. It helps coaches align their practices with current industry standards, ensuring they deliver high-quality, ethical coaching. Coaches pursuing ICF credentials or looking to enhance their coaching methods will find this updated competency model essential for both personal growth and client success.
