The 2020 ICF Code of Ethics has been the foundation for ethical coaching practices, providing essential guidance for coaches, mentors, trainers, and coaching students. This version of the code, applicable through March 31, 2025, will be used to review any complaint concerning behavior that occurred before April 1, 2025. Structured into five key sections — Introduction, Definitions, Core Values and Ethical Principles, Ethical Standards, and a Professional Pledge — this Code has helped shape ethical decision-making across the coaching profession. It outlines crucial principles, including confidentiality, fair treatment of clients, conflict resolution, and professional responsibility.
For both coaches and clients, the 2020–2025 ICF Code of Ethics has served as a trusted framework, ensuring that coaching engagements remain ethical, respectful, and aligned with professional best practices. It sets expectations around responsibilities to clients, proper business conduct, and the broader societal impact of coaching. ICF members and credential holders have been required to follow this Code, reinforcing the credibility and professionalism of the coaching industry.
A new ICF Code of Ethics went into effect on April 1, 2025, reflecting updates that address the evolving coaching landscape. While the 2020 Code remains a valuable reference, coaches should familiarize themselves with the revised 2025 Code to stay aligned with current ethical expectations.
