Melvin Smith, PCC, PhD, is professor emeritus in the Department of Organizational Behavior at Case Western Reserve University’s Weatherhead School of Management. Melvin serves on the Global Board of the International Coaching Federation (ICF) Thought Leadership Institute, as well as on the Science Board for BetterUp. He is also a past chair of the Graduate School Alliance for Education in Coaching (GSAEC).

Melvin received his PhD in organizational behavior and human resource management from the University of Pittsburgh’s Katz Graduate School of Business. His research and teaching focus on leadership and emotional intelligence in the workplace, as well as leadership development through executive coaching. His work appears in a number of academic and practitioner journals, and he is co-author, with Richard Boyatzis and Ellen Van Oosten, of the book Helping People Change: Coaching with Compassion for Lifelong Learning and Growth (Harvard Business Review Press).
