Mentor coaching shapes how coaches grow. The ICF Mentor Coach Specialization (MCS) helps shape how mentor coaching grows around the world.
Created by ICF in collaboration with experienced mentor coaches, the MCS establishes a globally recognized benchmark for mentor coaching preparation and practice. It recognizes professionals who have completed advanced mentor coach education and training in evaluating coaching skills aligned with ICF standards.
More importantly, it serves as a symbol of trust. When coaches seeking a mentor coach see the MCS, they know that the mentor has the knowledge and training needed to support their development.
Whether you support coaches independently, mentor students within accredited programs, or are strengthening your own mentor coaching practice, the MCS recognizes your commitment to excellence, integrity, and transformational growth.
Apply for the Mentor Coach Specialization
ICF Mentor Coach Specialization at a Glance
- Available at ACC, PCC, and MCC levels.
- Two application pathways to choose from.
- Designed for mentor coaches supporting credential applicants as well as credentialed coaches’ ongoing professional development.
- Requires mentor coaching education and training in evaluating coaching skills.
- Includes digital badges and registry recognition.
- Valid for three years.
Why the Mentor Coach Specialization Matters
Clear standards matter in any profession. Yet, expectations for effective mentor coaching have varied widely, making it difficult for coaches to evaluate who has the training and preparation needed for effective mentor coaching services and understand what high-quality mentor coaching should look and feel like.
In a survey of mentor coach practitioners:
- 68% said clients struggle to understand what high-quality mentor coaching should look and feel like.
- 60% reported client confusion about the mentor coach’s role and responsibilities.
- 55% cited that clients have difficulty evaluating mentor coach qualifications.
The ICF Mentor Coach Specialization helps address these challenges by establishing a trusted, globally recognized standard for mentor coaching preparation and practice, and offering an important quality assurance for coaches.
The MCS also helps exceptional mentor coaches stand out. It recognizes professionals who have completed advanced education aligned with the ICF Mentor Coaching Competencies and training in evaluating coaching skills. Earning the MCS demonstrates specialized expertise in supporting coaches as they strengthen competency and advance in their professional journey.
The MCS signals that a mentor coach:
- Brings specialized knowledge in coaching observation, feedback, and competency development.
- Has completed mentor coaching education aligned with the ICF Mentor Coaching Competencies.
- Demonstrates commitment to professional excellence and continued growth.
- Provides mentor coaching aligned with ICF standards and expectations.
What You Earn With the MCS
The Mentor Coach Specialization is available at three levels aligned with the ICF credentials: ACC, PCC, and MCC.
When approved, you will receive the following to help bring awareness and recognition to your experience and to help you market yourself as a specialized mentor coach:
- A digital badge for each approved specialization level you’ve earned.
- Recognition on the updated ICF Mentor Coach Registry.
- Visibility as a mentor coach who meets ICF standards for mentor coaching preparation and practice.
- Eligibility to provide mentor coaching services for ICF credential applicants and renewal candidates.
Who Should Apply for the MCS?
The Mentor Coach Specialization is designed for professionals who have invested in their development as mentor coaches through robust education, practice, and training on how to evaluate coaching skills for each level of mentor coaching services they provide (ACC, PCC, MCC). This shows a commitment to providing quality support to coaches as they work to develop the depth and range of coaching skills.
You may be an ideal candidate if you:
- Provide independent mentor coaching to credential applicants or renewal candidates, or support students within ICF-accredited coaching education programs.
- Have completed mentor coaching education — past or present.
- Have completed ICF training in evaluating coaching skills at the ACC, PCC, or MCC level.
- Want to demonstrate your advanced knowledge and experience through a globally recognized specialization.
To apply, you must hold one of the following:
- An active PCC credential.
- An active MCC credential.
- A renewed, active ACC credential.
Please note: ACC credential-holders in their first credential cycle are not eligible for the MCS. You must renew your ACC credential at least once before applying.
How to Choose the Right Application Pathway
There are two different application pathways to apply for the MCS:
- Standard Path.
- Credit for Prior Learning Path.
The best option depends on your mentor coaching experience and educational background.
Choose the Standard Path if you:
- Are actively developing your mentor coaching practice.
- Are seeking, currently completing, or recently completed robust mentor coaching education.
- Want comprehensive, structured preparation aligned with the ICF Mentor Coaching Competencies and credential-specific skills evaluation courses.
- Do not yet have extensive mentor coaching experience.
Choose the Credit for Prior Learning Path if you:
- Have a significant amount of mentor coaching experience.
- Have supported multiple coaches in earning ICF ACC, PCC, or MCC credentials, either
- As an independent mentor coach providing mentor coaching in group or individual sessions, or
- As a mentor coach for learners within ICF accredited Level 1, 2, or 3 educational program(s).
- Already use coaching observation and feedback extensively in your work.
- Have completed or are currently completing ICF evaluation training at the ACC, PCC, or MCC levels.
- Want recognition for prior professional experience alongside targeted education.
The biggest difference between the two pathways is how prior experience is recognized. The Standard Path emphasizes comprehensive education. The Credit for Prior Learning Path recognizes demonstrated mentor coaching experience alongside focused education.
Both pathways lead to the same MCS designation.

Prepare Your Application
It’s important to prepare materials for your application prior to submitting. If you are applying for the MCS at different credential levels (ACC, PCC, MCC), you will need to complete one application for each credential level you are pursuing.
