Mentor coaching is essential to coach development. It helps coaches strengthen competency, deepen self-awareness, and integrate feedback into practice with greater confidence and consistency.
And demand for high-quality mentor coach education continues to grow. In a survey of mentor coach practitioners, 57% of respondents said mentor coaches should complete formal education to hold or maintain mentor coach status. Yet across the profession, mentor coaching education has often lacked consistent standards, shared expectations, and clear recognition of program quality.
The Advanced Accreditation in Mentor Coaching helps address these gaps and strengthens mentor coaching education across the profession by creating:

This is a stand-alone accreditation. You do not need an existing Level 1, Level 2, Level 3, or CCE accreditation to apply.

The standards for the Advanced Accreditation in Mentor Coaching support programs in exemplifying excellence in high-quality mentor coaching education.
Programs seeking this advanced accreditation must demonstrate rigorous, competency-based mentor coach education aligned with:
- ICF Mentor Coaching Competencies.
- ICF Core Competencies.
- Ethical practice standards.
- Professional expectations for mentor coaching.
Curriculum & Learning Design
I. Program Structure Overview
Total Student Contact Hours: 60+ Hours

- 80% Mentor Coach Specific Education (minimum of 48 hours)
- 20% Resource Development (RD) (12 hours)
- 50% Synchronous / 50% Asynchronous
Required Components
- 5 Observed Mentor Coaching Sessions
- Written feedback required for at least 3
- Primary focus: Applied demonstration and structured feedback on a participant’s use of ICF Mentor Coaching competencies in practice.
- 5 Mentoring on Mentoring Sessions (or Supervision on Mentoring)
- Primary focus: Reflective practice and development of the mentor coach
- Final Assignment
- Portfolio review / Faculty panel review / Capstone observation
II. Core Competencies Breakdown (at least 48 hours)
- Mentor Coaching Competencies
- Role and scope of mentor coaching
- Distinction between coaching, supervision, and mentor coaching
- Developmental feedback frameworks
- Evaluative vs developmental feedback

Faculty Requirements
Faculty are expected to model the professionalism, ethical practice, and developmental mindset central to effective mentor coaching. Therefore, all faculty must hold:
- An active ICF credential (PCC, MCC, or renewed ACC).
- The appropriate Mentor Coach Specialization (MCS) by the first renewal cycle of the Advanced Accreditation.
Assessment & Evaluation
Students demonstrate competency through successful completion of program requirements, including:
Instructional hours.
- Mentor coaching.
- Observed coaching.
- A final assignment.
Programs must ensure participants complete the applicable ICF ACC BARS, PCC Markers, and/or MCC BARS depending on the credential-level focus of the program. This requirement may be met by incorporating the training into the curriculum or by verifying successful completion through the ICF Learning Portal.
What Is the Application Process?
You can apply for the Advanced Accreditation in Mentor Coaching through the ICF Accreditation Portal.
As part of the application process, you will be asked to submit:
- General program information (i.e., languages, location, description, website, etc.).
- Curriculum outline.
- Observed coaching sessions with written feedback.
- Mentor coaching sessions with written feedback.
- Final assignment samples.

Review Timeline
Most applications are reviewed within 8–12 weeks, although review timelines may extend slightly during January and July.
Throughout the review process, ICF accreditation staff may contact you for clarification or updates. This email communication will come from icfheadquarters@coachingeducation.org.
Renewal and Ongoing Compliance
This advanced accreditation is valid for three years. To maintain accreditation status, organizations must continue meeting ICF standards and renewal requirements. If found out of compliance with ICF standards, policies, or ethics requirements, you may lose this accreditation status.
Renewal Application Fee: $1,500 USD every three years.
Refund Policy: ICF accreditation applications and accreditation renewal applications are non-refundable once submitted and include not only the review of all submitted materials but also any benefits included in the ICF accreditation cycle if accreditation is awarded.
