Lexington, KY—The International Coaching Federation (ICF) announced today the launch of two pioneering competency models: the ICF Mentor Coaching Competencies and the ICF Coaching Supervision Competencies. These evidence-based frameworks mark a significant step forward in the coaching industry.
“Mentor coaching and coaching supervision have long served an integral role in the development of coach practitioners, though little research-based resources have been available to guide and support mentor coaches and coaching supervisors. Until now,” stated Carrie Abner, ICF Vice President of Credentials and Standards. “Developed by and for mentor coaches and coaching supervisors, these competency frameworks help practitioners take their skills to the next level, provide a clear path for education and development, and promote consistency and quality in mentor coaching and coaching supervision practice.”
Key highlights of the new competency models include:
ICF Mentor Coaching Competencies
- The first validated set of standards for mentor coaching practice
- Providing clarity for practitioners and clients
- Forming the basis for future educational accreditation and practitioner designations
ICF Coaching Supervision Competencies
- One of the most rigorously validated sets of standards for coaching supervision
- A balanced structure with flexibility to accommodate diverse approaches
- A design made to evolve alongside the coaching supervision field
Both models outline critical tasks, knowledge, skills, and attributes necessary for effective mentor coaching and coaching supervision, empowering coaches to refine their skills and develop as leaders in the profession.
By establishing a common language and shared standards, ICF reinforces its commitment to encouraging continuous growth, ethical practices, and professional accountability within the coaching community.
