Ethics is part of how we show up — every day, in every coaching interaction. When we understand it, we don’t just follow standards. We build trust, strengthen our profession, and lead with confidence.
That was the focus of the “Demystifying Ethics” session, which is part of the ICF DEIB’s Voices of Belonging webinar series.
This conversation centered on the role of ICF’s Ethics and Compliance function, making it clearer, more accessible, and easier to navigate for members. From the Ethical Conduct Review (ECR) process to brand compliance, members gained a practical understanding of what happens behind the scenes and what to expect if they ever engage with these processes. And you can, too, from the recording.
Bringing Clarity to Ethics and Compliance
What happens when an ethics concern is raised?
How does the review process work?
What does it mean to be named in an ethical complaint?
These are questions the session addressed, helping to remove uncertainty and replace it with understanding. Members gained a clearer view of:
- How ethics complaints are reviewed.
- How decisions are made and communicated.
- What fairness and consistency look like in practice.
- How compliance supports the professionalism and integrity of coaching worldwide.
Why This Matters for You
Trust is foundational to coaching. The trust between you and your clients. The trust between you and ICF. We aim to support you with clarity, so you can engage with confidence when navigating a question, responding to a concern, or ensuring your practice aligns with ICF standards.
This work reflects the ICF Strategic Plan’s focus on “Coaching Excellence and Value” and “Organizational Development and Excellence” by strengthening both the standards that guide our profession and the systems that support you as a member. In practice, this means clear expectations; consistent, fair processes; and, ultimately, a stronger foundation of trust across our global coaching community.
A Shared Commitment
Ethics doesn’t belong to a single role, team, or function. It belongs to all of us. Each ICF member plays a role in upholding the Code of Ethics. ICF provides the structure to ensure that commitment is applied fairly across the globe. Together, this is how we continue to shape a profession grounded in trust, credibility, and global impact.
