A New Approach to Goal Setting

Posted by Teresia LaRocque, MCC (Canada) | January 21, 2015 | Comments (1)

January is a popular time to set goals. In my last blog I wrote about why we need more than just motivation to make our goals a reality. We need to get inspired about the business we are creating. Getting inspired means going beyond conventional goal setting techniques and crafting a vision based on values.

As coaches, many of us have heard about values and more than likely have done a lot of exploring around our own values. I encourage you this January, as you are exploring your goals for 2015, to consider choosing your business goals based on your values.

Values are the essence of who we are. When you align with your true values, you feel most like yourself, and life becomes effortless. When our goals are oriented around our values, it means we are living a life of passion and fulfillment. Value-based goals propel you in the direction of your vision and purpose.

Business goals that grow from your values are meaningful and sustainable. Aligning your vision for your business with your true values is the key to embracing your entrepreneurial capabilities with ease.

Begin by asking yourself these questions:

  • What do you need to accomplish in order to have a life with no regrets?
  • What role would you like your business to have in your community, your country, and the world?
  • If money were no object, what would your goals be?
  • If you knew the world was going to end in one year with no one left surviving, what would you do?
  • In an ideal world, how would you spend your time?
  • If there were no obstacles to success, what would your ambitions be?

Think back on your life.  What stands out as a meaningful experience? Remember how you felt in that moment. Why was it so special?

Your answers should begin to reveal the things that matter most to you. These are your values emerging. What are the value patterns you see in your answers? What keeps coming up again and again? Is it connection? Security? Contribution? Achievement?

There are no wrong answers here. Whatever surfaces is part of your individual purpose and vision. The values you discover will help you build the most successful and fulfilling business possible.
