Coaching + AI: A Human-Centered Future

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is creating new possibilities for coaching, from supporting a coach’s work to becoming part of the coaching experience itself. As those possibilities grow, so do important questions about where AI can add value and what remains distinctly human.

ICF’s white paper, Coaching + AI: A Partnership to Unleash Potential, explores how coaches and organizations can approach AI with both curiosity and responsibility. It examines the different capabilities AI and professional coaches bring to human development, as well as three modalities across the coaching and AI landscape: coach-led, hybrid, and AI-led.

Together, these perspectives offer a human-centered view of how coaching can evolve with technology while remaining grounded in the trust, presence, discernment, ethical accountability, and professional responsibility that distinguish professional coaching.

Standards for Artificial Intelligence (AI) Coaching

As AI becomes more integrated into coaching and coaching-related development, clear standards can help support its responsible, ethical, and effective use.

ICF collaborated with experienced coaches and AI coaching developers to create ICF Artificial Intelligence Coaching Framework and Standards, providing a foundation for understanding and evaluating AI coaching systems.

The framework helps coaches, developers, organizations, and coaching buyers consider important questions around areas such as ethics, transparency, privacy, safety, accessibility, and the quality of the coaching experience.

Using AI in Coaching

AI can support coaching in a variety of ways, from streamlining work behind the scenes to extending reflection and learning beyond a coaching conversation.

But more technology doesn’t automatically mean a better coaching experience. The important question is whether the technology has a useful, clearly defined role and whether its use serves the client.

Depending on the context, AI can help:

  • Support reflection and learning: AI tools can provide prompts, exercises, or opportunities for reflection between coaching conversations.
  • Recognize patterns: AI can help organize and analyze information to surface themes or patterns for further exploration.
  • Support goals and follow-through: AI tools can help clients capture goals, actions, and progress over time.
  • Improve access to information and resources: AI can help coaches and clients find and organize relevant information more efficiently.
  • Streamline administrative work: Coaches may use AI behind the scenes for tasks such as scheduling, note organization, research, or business operations.

The goal is to make intentional choices about when technology adds value — and when human connection, judgment, and presence matter most.

The Task Force

To further explore uses in the marketplace, ICF has formed a task force that is specifically focused on the impact of AI in coaching. Through the collaboration of subject matter experts, thought leaders, ICF staff, and board directors, this task force seeks the following outcomes:

  • Learn from the Experts: Create resources and learning materials about AI in coaching, including the definition and components of AI, and an outline of how this technology is and is not being used in the coaching industry.
  • Engage Enterprise Users: Define how and why organizations are using AI-driven technology when providing coaching and development to their employees.
  • Hear from Coaches: Understand the experience of AI in coaching from the perspective of the coach.
  • Draft Guidelines: Draft guidelines about the use of AI in coaching.
