2024 ICF Coaching Snapshot: Coaching and Mental Well-Being

A majority of coaches — 85% to be exact — say their clients want support for mental well-being. But what can they do to help?

The 2024 ICF Coaching Snapshot: Coaching and Mental Well-Being delves into this rising demand, offering valuable insights into the strategies coaches employ, the challenges they encounter, and their confidence levels in making a positive impact. Additionally, it highlights whether coaches believe more training and resources are needed in this area.


Key Findings from Our Research

Even though coaches report struggling with boundaries between coaching and mental health expertise, overall, they are optimistic about their ability to positively impact clients’ mental well-being, according to the 2024 ICF Coaching Snapshot: Coaching and Mental Well-Being. Here’s are some other key highlights:

  • Mental well-being is an area of coaching expected to grow in the coming years with 72% of coach practitioners planning to continue and expand their offering and effectiveness in it.
  • Mindfulness, visualization, and meditation techniques are the most used techniques to help support clients with their well-being. But they are not the most effective.
  • 78% cite business/career issues as main drivers for mental well-being requests.
  • 72% of internal coaches want more mental well-being training.

Methodology

Over a six-week period via an online survey, responses were collected from coaches, HR and talent leaders, and managers and leaders using coaching skills. The survey was available in nine languages to make it more accessible so we could capture insights from as many coaching professionals as possible. 

With 10,039 respondents in 147 countries and all major world regions, the 2024 Snapshot provides an up-to-date profile of the coach practitioner and spotlights the connection between coaching and mental well-being.
