What Is Continuing Coach Education (CCE)?

CCE keeps you on the road to coaching mastery, fueling your journey as a powerful coach. Just like a car needs regular check-ups and upgrades, great coaches need ongoing learning and development to keep their skills sharp and their practices fresh.

With CCE, you’ll gain access to advanced training, explore cutting-edge coaching techniques, and connect with new ideas that elevate your impact. By continually refining your approach, you’ll be able to respond effectively to diverse client needs, uphold your professional credibility, and demonstrate a commitment to growth and ethical practice.

In addition, CCE is required to maintain coaching credentials, ensuring certified coaches are fully equipped to inspire, motivate, and guide their clients with excellence and relevance.

Why Are CCE Credits Important for Credential Renewal?

For ICF credential-holders, coaching is more than a profession — it’s a journey of growth, learning, and continuous improvement. To support this commitment to ongoing development and ensure excellence, ICF requires credential renewal every three years. As part of this renewal, credential-holders complete a specific number of CCE credits, which serve as a bridge to new skills, deeper insights, and heightened mastery.

By engaging in CCE, ICF credential-holders challenge themselves to keep learning, stay current with industry standards and ethics, and adapt to the ever-evolving needs of their clients. This process isn’t just about meeting requirements; it’s about making tomorrow better than today for both coaches and those they serve.

Types of CCE Credits Offered by ICF

ICF credential-holders must earn 40 CCE credits during each renewal cycle, and CCE is available in two credit types: Core Competencies and Resource Development. These different types are designed to support your holistic development as a coach, allowing you to customize your learning, stay flexible, and focus on areas that align with your career goals, client needs, and evolving trends in the coaching profession.

Core Competencies

Core Competencies CCE credits focus on deepening and enhancing your understanding and practice of the ICF Core Competencies through real-time interactive instruction or activities.

These competencies are essential skills for effective coaching, such as establishing trust and safety, active listening, and evoking awareness. Completing courses or activities centered on these competencies helps you strengthen the foundational skills necessary for high-quality coaching.

For ICF credential renewal, 24 CCE credits must be in Core Competencies, with 3 credits specifically in coaching ethics.

Resource Development

CCE credits in Resource Development focus on expanding your knowledge and tools beyond the ICF Core Competencies, contributing to your overall professional development to help you refine your approach and better serve your clients. This type of CCE includes learning opportunities around personal growth, tools or assessments, and business building.

For ICF credential renewal, you may earn up to 16 CCE credits in Resource Development.
